The Language of Flowers

by Vanessa Diffenbaugh.
In The Language of Flowers, Vanessa Diffenbaugh’s powerful first novel, a damaged young woman, Victoria Jones, who can only communicate through the Victorian language of flowers, goes from being homeless to a sought after wedding floral designer.
Review:
This is the captivating story of Victoria Jones, a young woman damaged by a past of neglect and abuse. Emotionally isolated, she engages with the greater world through secret messages using the forgotten language of flowers. The traumas of her past are slowly revealed throughout the novel, gradually building up to Victoria’s ultimate betrayal, facing up to this is her only hope for redemption and reconciliation.
The characters created are not only engaging, but believable and sympathetic. The author’s sensitive treatmen
t of difficult social themes is a credit. Rather than trivialising such complex issues she has carefully built them into the foundation of her story. This book is born of an imaginative concept which has been lovingly nurtured into a compelling story, full of hidden intricacies with clever knots and twists. It was a wonderful read.
